10 is &#8216;mine&#8217;&#8230;, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I don&#8217;t like Windows 10, but it likes&#8230; the progress&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So&#8230; now that win7 is ded, and winxp doesn&#8217;t work that well for malware analysis (and it&#8217;s 32-bit only), I finally (a few months back really) put myself together to build my perfect test guest 64-bit Windows 10 OS&#8230; and while doing so I came across a lot of quirks, took some screenshots, and I thought I will jot down some notes here in case you face similar issues&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note, I am a big fan of VMWare, so the info below is primarily focused on VMWare Workstation&#8230; VirtualBox experience should not be too far off though&#8230; I hope&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the steps I took to make my Windows 10 Guest OS perfect (to be clear, I followed many of these steps on my host Windows 10 as well):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Install to SSD<ul><li>I bought my first SSD circa 2011 and never looked back; this an incredible performance booster and you need it for your frequently used VM guests!!! <\/li><li>Assume your SSD will go kaput on you at any time around 3-5 years down the line, so make regular backups<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Install the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/software-download\/windows10\">Windows 10 OS<\/a>; whether you go from a clean ISO, or upgrade your old Win7\/Win8 it doesn&#8217;t matter<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"152\" height=\"125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7063\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Go through the wizard&#8230;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a privacy\/spying Options:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_6.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" should have a clean OS installed<\/li><li>It&#8217;s time to install VM Tools:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_8.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"291\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7070\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>You may need to run the VMTools setup64.exe manually from a mounted DVD:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_9.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7071\" width=\"500\" height=\"95\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Restart<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At this stage you have the OS installed and VM Tools are running &#8211; SAVE THE VM SNAPSHOT NOW. If anything goes wrong, you can revert to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The VM tools allows you to change screen resolution and copy &amp; paste between the host and the guest system, as well as access the network shares. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hooray!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s just the beginning&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Download and run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oo-software.com\/en\/shutup10\">O&amp;O ShutUp10<\/a>. Choose all options aka &#8216;Apply all settings&#8217;. Yup, make it all green:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_A.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_A.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7072\" width=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_A.png 796w, https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_A-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/win10_A-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>You will need to restart the system after applying the changes<\/li><li>Now&#8230; <\/li><li>OS is installed, the basic nuisance is gone, but it&#8217;s not over yet.<\/li><li>Download Total Commander 64-bit version (TC) from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghisler.com\/\">https:\/\/www.ghisler.com\/<\/a><ul><li>Run TC as Admin<\/li><li>Now you can do anything you like on the system and have a better Program\/File Manager than Explorer will ever be<\/li><li>Hope you have a Total Commander license, it&#8217;s worth it!<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Now download <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sysinternals\/downloads\/psexec\">psexec<\/a><ul><li>Run psexec -s -i cmd.exe from your elevated cmd.exe (admin)<\/li><li>Now you have a terminal under SYSTEM account<\/li><li>Launch Regedit.exe<\/li><li>Go to Computer\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services<\/li><li>Yeaah&#8230; <\/li><li>Time to kill annoying services:<ul><li>You have two options: be a good boy, or a bad boy; choose the latter&#8230;.<\/li><li>aka&#8230;.<ul><li>Walk through all of them; I know it&#8217;s painful, but&#8230;<\/li><li>If you don&#8217;t like the particular service, just mod its &#8216;Start&#8217; entry to become &#8216;4&#8217; which is an equivalent of &#8216;Disabled&#8217;<\/li><li>I know for some options you can run gpedit.msc and select &#8216;disable service&#8217; options under admin templates, but well&#8230; these will in the end run services.
