Some of these ideas survived till today and even now one can either use pre-installed ones, or install new deskbands on the system.<\/p>\n<p>There are many coders who already did a great job explaining what desk bands are and how to implement them, so instead of pretending that I know what I am talking about, I will just suggest that you read this great article &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.codeproject.com\/Articles\/39189\/Shell-Extensibility-Explorer-Desk-Band-Tray-Notifi#DeskBand\">Shell Extensibility &#8211; Explorer Desk Band, Tray Notification Icon et al.<\/a>&#8216; by Alex Blekhman. When you run the Calendar.exe that is attached to the article you will then have an option to make the calendar present as a Deskband<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/deskband1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/deskband1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/deskband1.png 482w, https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/deskband1-300x166.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough, as far as I can tell Autoruns still doesn&#8217;t detect them.<\/p>\n<p>To find out where the information about deskbands and other Explorer extension bars is stored in Registry you can read this <a href=\"https:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/windows\/desktop\/cc144099(v=vs.85).aspx\">article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you are in a hurry, just need to enumerate Registry and look for all CLSIDs with the Implemented Categories\\ key with the following deskband identifiers set:<\/p>\n<pre>DeskBand\r\n{00021492-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\r\n\r\nVerticalBand \r\n{00021493-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\r\n\r\nHorizontalBand \r\n{00021494-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}<\/pre>\n<p>e.g.:<\/p>\n<pre>HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Classes\\CLSID\\...\\<\/pre>\n<pre>Implemented Categories\\{00021492-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}<\/pre>\n<p>Additionally, it may be worth checking the following key:<\/p>\n<pre>HKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\\r\nDiscardable\\PostSetup\\Component Categories\\...\\Enum<\/pre>\n<p>This is where Explorer stores cached information about explorer bar objects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back in early 2000s shell extensions and desktop enhancers were very popular.
