{"id":10210,"date":"2025-11-04T01:33:32","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T01:33:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/?p=10210"},"modified":"2025-11-04T01:33:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T01:33:32","slug":"1-little-known-secret-of-cliconfg-exe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hexacorn.com\/blog\/2025\/11\/04\/1-little-known-secret-of-cliconfg-exe\/","title":{"rendered":"1 little known secret of cliconfg.exe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is a blast from the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copy <em>c:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\cliconfg.exe<\/em> to a folder of your choosing and execute it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will attempt to load a bunch of some very old-school DLLs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>C:\\Windows\\System32\\DBMSRPCN.DLL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C:\\Windows\\System32\\DBMSSPXN.DLL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C:\\Windows\\System32\\DBMSADSN.DLL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C:\\Windows\\System32\\DBMSVINN.DLL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C:\\Windows\\System32\\DBMSGNET.DLL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C:\\Windows\\System32\\DBMSSNET.DLL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C:\\Windows\\System32\\DBMSQLGC.DLL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C:\\Windows\\System32\\NTWDBLIB.DLL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The last one on the list is the one that executes code, so placing your payload inside <em>C:\\Windows\\System32\\NTWDBLIB.DLL<\/em> is a guarantee that it will be executed when you run a copy of <em>c:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\cliconfg.exe<\/em> from a different location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am lazy and am not researching the other ones, but I am sure it is most likely due to a lack of some specific export functions that my test DLLs miss to export that stop the code execution when these earlier DLLs are mapped to memory but not loaded. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a blast from the past.
